If You Take Care of Your Pooper, It Will Take Care of You..

Never, ever underestimate the importance of your pooper.

AKA, your digestive system.

Have you ever gone for more than two days without pinching off a loaf? Serious misery. In fact, I know of a relative of mine who had to resort to a TURKEY BASTER to relieve their misery after an extended period of non-dumpage. (Long story, and because I like this person, I think I'll keep that one to myself.)

Your backside's best friend is fibre. There are two kinds of fibre that you simply MUST have regularly in order for everything to flow smoothly- soluble (like the fibre found in fruit) and insoluble (that which is found in twigs and bark. Oh, and whole grains, too.) You need both to function smoothly.

I like to work fibre into all kinds of sneaky places. Over the last three years, we in the Williams family have reached a place in our dining lives where we eat almost nothing made of white flour. (White Flour=Death. I mean, have you ever squeezed in your hand a slice of Bens Holsum? Turns to glue in your hand, and I bet what happens in the depths of your bowels isn't much different.)

No white bread, no white pasta. OK, I use some white flour in my baking, but I'm working on it...don't hassle me, man.

In an attempt to make something both fibrous and palatable to two fussy veg*n kids at lunchtime (that was also not a nutritional disaster) I came up with these. My boy actually took one for lunch today and commented at supper how yummy they were. That means something coming from him, trust me. Give them a try and see what you think.

Bran and Oatmeal Snack Bars

Preheat Oven to 425 degrees. These are best cooked on a baking stone, BTW.

Mix in a large bowl:

3/4 cup dry bran (not bran cereal)

1/4 cup rolled oats

2 Tbsp toasted wheat germ

1/4 cup brown sugar

3/4 cup WW flour

1/2 cup white flour

1/2 tsp salt

Mix in:

1/4 cup silken tofu

1/2 cup vegan margarine

(Use your hands to work this in.)

Then add the following ingredients, already mixed together:

1/4 c maple syrup or agave nectar

1/4 cup hot water

1 tsp vanilla

Add a bit more flour if necessary to make a smooth ball, only slightly sticky. Roll out onto baking stone. Use a pizza cutter to cut into bars of the desired size. Prick with a fork. bake about 10 minutes at 375. Cool on stone about three minutes before transferring to a wire rack.

Eat, Poop, and Enjoy!

PS: I'm taking an informal poll. I want to know, do you read on the toilet? And if so, what do you read? Drop me a line and let me know.

HA! I love informal polls... especially when they are about poo.

Honestly, I have never understood reading on the loo. I don't think you should be in there long enough to read much of anything! If you are eating well it should go quick and easy... no time for reading.

I think, maybe, if you are able to read the paper, a chapter or three in your novel, or an entire magazine, you should take a look at what you're eating. Something's awry.

Just my two, er... ten, cents. :)

Happy pooping!!

btw... great recipe! Can't wait to try them!!

I do read on the toilet. Mostly magazines, but sometimes a juicy novel I can't put down long enough to use the restroom. And I've also been known to bring the laptop in with me :P

We keep little factoid books or joke books in the loo, makes the reads short and sweet.
I also keep "Everybody Poops" in the guest bathroom for encouragement :o)

I too am a sneeky mom and wife. Finally my family is perfecty happy with the fiber I sneek in. Now, one of my grown daughters does the same thing with her family. Hey we need to pass down family cooking secrets. :o)

I rarely spend enough time to sit and read, but in the case of extra time I read cookbooks and magazines while visiting the john. :o)

A one of the joys of being vegan, rarely do we come up short on fiber!
I only read while fully clothed.

Tracy, Should the bran be oat bran, wheat bran? Does it matter?
Thanks! I'll definitely try these!

No I don't read on the toilet, but not for trying. There's just not time. I am finished with my business quickly, thanks to the wonders of coffee, genetics, fibre or something. Very envious of my husband who has a good 15 minutes on the can for his daily reading.

I don't personally read on the Potta but I do keep plenty of Vegnews back issues available for those who would like to. fiber is not one of our issues in the house as I love garbanzos and ww pasta and lots of Fruits and veggies. my son does too. I will try these bars, it's good to have something quick to grab for road trips and running late days. They look like they would hold up well in storage. About the zucchini I know there is an mock apple pie or crisp that I have heard is wonderful too. It is good for the BIG zucchini. I love your blog and tell everyone to check it out.

Yes, I read. In my family we call that room "The Library." Most off it's a book but sometimes a magazine or the newspaper. It might even be a letter from a friend.

These remind me of those All-Bran bars. Do they turn out crunchy?

As for reading in the can....sometimes. I'll read a magazine usually. Celebrity magazines are good for bathroom reading. They're usually full of crap. HAHA!!

As a sufferer of IBS fiber has not been my best friend. I just have to look at an apple and it sends me running to the bathroom! For the sake of better health as I am now in my fifties I will put up with the pain of more fiber in my diet and make sure a bathroom is close at hand. If anyone has any advice to lessen my gut suffering I'm all ears.

Two things:

First: I need to make the recipe, daughter is vegan and could use way more fiber and well so can I.

Second: Yes, I do read when I facilitate, it relaxes me and it's just about the only "alone time" I get to enjoy a book that I don't HAVE TO (pleasure reading) read.

I love this thread of comments...:0) I smiled....personally, I am never in there long enough to read more than the back of a shampoo bottle, but my husband will sit on the loo until he's finished the chapter he's on. It drives the rest of us nuts!
